Brightener

Description
Chemical substance used to brighten, whiten, or enhance the appearance of colour of fabric and paper, usually by absorbing light in the ultraviolet and violet region (340-370 nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum, and re-emitting light in the blue region (420-470 nm). Causes a “whitening” effect by increasing the overall amount of blue light reflected. Optically colourless on the substrate and does not absorb in the visible part of the spectrum. Also referred to as a brightening agent; fluorescent whitening agent; optical brightener; or whitener. See closely related: bleaching agent; photosensitive agent.
